Christmas, Christmas Time Is Here!

Ah, a December Saturday evening...I'm tucked up in my warmest jimjams with a cup of tea and an English muffin preparing to do one of my favorite lame seasonal activities: watching Christmas episodes of television shows on DVD. And if you think I'm SUPER lame for doing this...well. Sustained, I guess. But I AM super lame and this blog generally documents my lamitudes and you find that delightful, DON'T YOU? Ahem.

ANYWAY.

I'm starting with My So-Called Life,"So-Called Angels." I'm about 30 seconds in and oh, Ricky. I started here because I've been listening to the Extra Hot Great podcast (And if you're not, you should be. And the Pop Culture Happy Hour. Seriously. They both bring me much glee at work. And really, who couldn't use more glee at work? You could. I know you could) and they were talking about MSCL and it made me remember how much I love that show. (Also, 10 minutes in and I remember how much I loathe Angela's sister Danielle. Shut UP, Danielle, GOD.)

So here's what I've got on deck (Literally, I have a pile of DVDs sitting next to me):
  • Gilmore Girls, "Forgiveness and Stuff," season 1, episode 10. Everyone is still mad at everyone after Rory and Dean stayed out all night after her first dance. The Richard goes to the hospital with chest pains and they get over it. Oh, season one Gilmore Girls. How much you did not suck! Remember when I you didn't want to slap Rory?
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Amends," season 3, episode 10. The one where The First Evil makes its, um, first appearance and tries to corrupt Angel. And Willow tries to seduce Oz in an adorable fashion. I know most people don't like this episode but it's full of angst delicious angst and I love it.
  • Joan of Arcadia, "The Uncertainty Principle," season 1 episode 11. This one fudging a little because it's not a terribly Christmasy episode but it revolves around the winter dance. God tells Joan to go to the dance with a troubled boy (Who played Andrew Schillinger on Oz and it weirded me out to see him here) and things get all dramatic. I always get the chills during the last five minutes of this episode.
  • Veronica Mars, "An Echolls Family Christmas," season 1, episode 10. Veronica is hired to find out who stole the winnings from a 09er poker game and Keith investigates a famous actor's stalking. There's a shanking. It's pretty awesome.
  • Doctor Who, "The Christmas Invasion," series 2, episode 1. God, I love this episode. David Tennant's first episode as the Tenth Doctor and he totally kicks ass. I got annoyed with Ten toward the end (SHUT UP WITH YOUR EMO MAN PAIN, FOR REAL!) but I adored him when he first started.
  • The West Wing, "In Excelsis Deo," season 1, episode 20 and "Noel," season 2, episode 10. The first is when a homeless veteran dies wearing a coat that Toby donated to Goodwill and Toby arranges a military funeral for him. The second is the one where Josh has PTSD and is my second favorite episode of TWW EVER (My first favorite, like everyone else ever, is "Two Cathedrals").
  • The Office, "Christmas Party, season 2, episode 16. Yaaaankee swap and Jim gets Pam a teapot. (I also hate Michael Scott.)
  • Scrubs, "My Own Personal Jesus," season 1, episode 11. The gang deliver a baby in a park. Dr. Cox is grinchy.
So...what's YOUR favorite Christmas episode? Something I didn't mention? Do you hate Danielle Chase as much as I do?

Happy Holidays, Y'all!

I hope all our readers who haven't fled out of disinterest had a wonderful holiday season! If you did flee out of disinterest, well, you aren't reading this anyway, so who cares?

Things I've been doing lately:
  • Baking many, many cookies, especially snickerdoodles. Snickerdoodles are the BEST.
  • Watching lots of British televison, particularly North and South (No, not the awful Civil War one. The U.K. one with the delectable Richard Armitage. If you like swoony period dramas, this is TOTALLY for you!) and MI-5, a twisty spy show. Which will soon star the delectable Richard Armitage but I'm not up to his season yet. But I can console myself with Matthew MacFadyen and Rupert Penry-J0nes.
  • Reading The Hunger Games trilogy. Like dystopian science fiction aimed at young adult readers? No? Read this anyway. You won't be sorry.
  • Reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire. Just like with The Hunger Games, it's a trilogy of which the first two books are available. AWESOME.
  • Listening to Adam Lambert and Lady GaGa. I KNOW. When did I turn into like, a 14-year-old raver? Or whatever the kids are calling it these days. I don't even know!
  • Just saw Sherlock Holmes. Loved it to little pieces. Mark Strong: super hot or superDUPER hot?
Things have been busy, but fun. Mostly, with some noteable exceptions. I promise, one of my New Year's resolutions will be to blog more often! Also, Mame has some big news and I'm sure she'll be about to share it!

DVDs What I Got For Christmas And Other Assorted Items

So, delightfully, I received many awesome DVDs as Christmas gifts. I have a rockin' Amazon Wishlist with so many divergent items on it that a friend of mine deemed it "schizophrenic." Heh.

  • The Dark Knight; I might have the teeniest obsession with this movie. It had the audacity to come out on DVD in December. Grr! I don't buy DVDs, CDs or books during November or December because you know, it's the holidays. But I did make the pronouncement that if I did not get The Dark Knight for Christmas that I would buy it on December 26th. But yay! My brother BW got it for me! He got me the super-duper, extra-chocolaty, 2-disc edition. Um. The extras suck! They suck! No commentary! No deleted scenes! In fact, no interviews with the actors at all! I mean, I respect the filmmakers not wanting to like, exploit Heath Ledger's miserably tragic death but come on. It's a glaring omission not to talk to ANY of the very fine actors in this film. There is one interesting little featurette about composing the music in the film, particularly the Joker's theme. That said, the movie is still AWESOME and I've watched it at least six times since I got it. Hi, I'm a geek, have we met?
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas; Also from BW, it's the 2-disc special edition! I haven't watched it yet, because I'm watching The Dark Knight over and over, but I will! Soon! I love this movie! Love the songs! Love Jack the Pumpkin King! Love Sally the Rag Doll! In fact, the next time I go to a costume party, I'm totally dressing up as her. I'd make an excellent Sally, I think...
  • Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie; My gift from Mame! This is our favorite show and one of our very favorite movies. We (and our dysfunctional little group of friends) used to quote it incessantly. Every time I sign for a package, in my head I say, "Wiiiilt Chaaamberlin."
  • Mad Men, season 1; We do a gift exchange for our extended family and my Pap had my name this year and this is what he got me! Awesome! Now I can finish watching and BW doesn't have to wait for my slow ass to get it from Netflix. Jon Hamm RULES.
  • Empire Records; I love this movie! It's one of the few movies I can tolerate Renee Zellwegger in! (The other two are Chicago and Cold Mountain) It has a great soundtrack and it's really funny. Stupid-funny but that's my kind of humor. I know it's not great, but it holds good memories for me and it's lots of fun. Besides, how can a movie go wrong when it brought us Rex Manning Day?
  • Panic At The Disco: Live in Chicago DVD/CD: Oh, shut up. Technically, I bought this for myself but I paid for it with a Barnes and Noble gift card given to me by my stepsister, so yeah. Whatever, I like Panic At The Disco, it's not a crime.
I also got the third book in the Lenore comic series and I got my mom the Sookie Stackhouse series, the books on which the HBO show True Blood that we LOVED is based. Since I'd already read the first book, she's letting me zip through the series while she reads book one. Heh, I'm already on book five. I never said I wasn't self-serving, ok? It's a pretty great series and I highly recommend it. Also, my mom is cooler than yours. It's time you accepted it. Sorry!

What did you get for [insert appropriate winter holiday here]?

Where've you been all my life...

...said the one month old with a laptop and an inkling for crude humor.

Well here is what I have been up to these last few weeks:
  • Thanksgiving in West Virginia. It snowed! Be jealous.
  • Agnes had a kidney stone and it might as well have rained fire and brimstone for the way my extended family reacted. The whole world stopped. I, of course, did not, but was heavily criticised under many people's breath. Newsflash: I don't care.
  • December has come, and with it comes everyone that I love's birthday. Dolly, Stewie (her son), Glow Bug, and of course - my own. Oh. And Jesus.
  • Beau and I have decided to have Christmas in our own home this year because we never have before. This means that a lot of family are coming in to visit which means that Beau and I are cleaning, a lot. Through out the year, despite many attempts to behave differently, we are pack rats. Now as the season of giving (and receiving!) approaches we are going room by room and decluttering. We've done three rooms and so far have given more to Goodwill than I think anyone could believe. We're talking truckloads. The house looks great, but it makes me think what it looks like the rest of the year. Dolly has made fun of me for starting "Now?" to clean for an event two weeks away; if only she knew!
  • I have once again renewed my anger at the local "All Christmas Music All the Time" radio station for playing that ridiculous song about a little child at a drug store trying to buy his mother a pair of shoes or a cure for cancer or some shit like that. I'll be honest I don't really listen, because I'm either sobbing or angrily lunging for the 'off' button. I can't stand songs that are sad just to be sad. A sweet love song that makes me cry? Fine. A ballad of a significant event with weird underlying sexual tones? OK by me. But sad just to make you cry? F that. Unless you're talking about "In the Ghetto" by Elvis. But c'mon, that's Elvis.
  • Old 1950's Christmas movies that I loved as a child and can now mock openly about the blatant sexism, homo-eroticism, and other unpolitically correctness. It makes for a fun hour every night. Thank you, ABC Family!!

Other than that, I've been busily planning Lady Bea's trip for New Year's Eve, and working.

More to come as the month passes me by.

Most Annoying VC Andrews Character? or...We're Ignoring Our Long Absence and Hoping You Will Too.

Get Us Started, Lady Bea:

It's a question for the ages, Dear Readers...who IS V.C. Andrews's most annoying heroine? I mean, there's so many...myriad snotty, incest-having, doormat-resembling, crazy bitches to choose from. Heaven, Cathy, Leigh, Ruby, Audrina, Carrie, Olivia, Christie, Annie...the list goes on and on. BUT. For my money? THE most irritating heroine is Dawn. The lead character of the Cutler series. HATE HER SO MUCH. I mean, it's fairly typical for Andrews's heroines to get all abused and face wacky obstacles, but Dawn is just so fucking whiny about it. Let's review, shall we? (Obviously, spoiler warnings abound.)

Dawn is the middle daughter of an itinerant, semi-trashy family with a sickly mom, an alcoholic dad, an angry brother, Jimmy and a baby sister, Fern. OR SO SHE THINKS. For reason that are rather murky, but further the plot so we'll let them go, her dad moves the family to Richmond, VA and sends his kids to a fancy private school. Naturally, Dawn and Jimmy are picked on by the rich kids and blah, blah, blah. Oh, and this boy Phillip Cutler, who's kind of a sexual predator, albeit a handsome one, sets his sights on our girl. So does his bitchy sister Clara Sue, but for other reasons. Namely, that she hates her and wants to destroy her. I kind of find myself rooting for Clara Sue, honestly. Oh yeah, and Dawn's all innocent and smart and perfect and has a beeeyooootiful singing voice. This will be semi-important later.

So, Dawn's mother dies and her dad get arrested for having kidnapped her from a rich family when she was a baby and guess what? She's Phillip and Clara Sue's sister! So, all those vehicular fumblings that she was engaged in after school with Phillip? Totally icky and pervy! And what does Dawn do? She cries and whines. And her new family mistreats her and makes her work as a chambermaid in their hotel. Heh. Jimmy runs away from his mean old foster family to visit her and he and Dawn MAKE OUT. Lovely. And after she MAKES OUT with her FAKE brother, her REAL brother rapes her. Clara Sue is awesomely mean to her some more. It turns out she's the result of an affair that her mother had with her FATHER-IN-LAW (Or maybe he raped Dawn's mother. Andrews changes her mind about that in a later book.) and her kidnapping was PLANNED. And when she confronts her evil grandmother, (MAN, does Andrews have some Grandmother Issues!) does she threaten to go public with the whole sordid tale, unless they treat her with some damn respect? NO. Does she tell them all to fuck off? NO. Whatever. The Grandmother agrees to ship Dawn off to some performing arts school in NY. (FAAAAAAAAAME! I wanna live FORE-EVER! Ahem. Sorry. It's not as fun as that. Trust me.)

When our not-so-intrepid heroine arrives at her dorm in NY, it turns out that the evil Grandmother has told the school that Dawn is a thieving, lying, stealing whore. I'm sorry; is that a problem? Oh, it is for Dawn, who bitches and moans constantly about it. Her roommate is cool and of COURSE, the other male student in the dorm FALLS IN LOVE WITH HER. Ugh. But no, Dawn is too busy ALMOST FUCKING her fake brother Jimmy when he comes to visit her from the Army. Um, Jimmy? Is making out with your underage fake sister really conduct becoming to a whatever in the military? I thought not! Oh, it gets better! Dawn then totally cheats on her almost-brother with her voice teacher and gets knocked up because apparently, it never occurred to her to use ANY kind of birth control. Seriously, it's NEVER mentioned. She's obnoxious and lies to everyone because she can't really admit that she's boning her teacher and makes up ridiculous stories about some guy named Alan. And enlists her cool roommate in "hiding" her pregnancy. Girl, please. Of course, the teacher totally ditches her, causing her to collapse dramatically in the streets of Manhattan. I'm pretty sure she gets hit by a taxi. Heh. Serves you right, you whiny bitch. Oh and then her uptight family ships her off to hide her shame. And guess what? She GOES and gets abused some more. Yawn. Oh, and then they sell off her baby. And she uncovers some crazy family secrets. Oh, and WHINES SOME FUCKING MORE.

Jimmy rescues her and forgives her for her cheating ways and HAVING SOME OTHER GUY'S KID. But since she's sort of his sister, I guess it's hard to get up on a high moral ground. So, Dawn gets her daughter Christie back and her grandmother dies and things are looking up. But DAWN HAS TO WHINE ABOUT HOW HARD HER LIFE HAS BEEN AND HOW COULD ANYTHING GOOD EVER HAPPEN TO HER?! Sigh. Clara Sue is hilariously evil and jealous and fucks up Dawn's shit whenever she gets the chance. She stuffs Christie in a laundry bin! She brings her trashy boyfriends to snooty family events! She literally kicks Dawn's ass! Which causes her to have a miscarriage, which isn't so awesome. But does Dawn have Clara Sue's crazy ass thrown in jail? NO. 'Cause she's a whiny bitch.

So, Dawn sucks. Lots. Sure, she's had a tough life, but she gets some good breaks too. True love, two (eventually) healthy kids, a nice career, friends that are WAY better than she deserves... Are they ever enough for her? NO. She whines and bitches and does a lot of speaking-through-tears. Luckily, she DIES. HA.

And now for Mame's rebuttal (heh..."butt"):

I love the entire catalogue that is Flowers in the Attic. I can’t help it. I have read and reread every line so many times that I have had to buy a different book because the old one has become too worn. All this being said, I must confess that when asked which heroine of the infamous VC Andrews annoys me the most I am forced to say that it is none other than Cathy Dollanganger herself.
I’M SORRY! But let’s be honest, Cathy is annoying as hell. Do I really need to break it down? I’m going to (of course) but do I really need to?
Let’s begin with her first ‘marriage’ to the good doctor Paul Scott Sheffield. Here’s a guy who she is worried has aborted a freakish baby of hers (PS Cathy, a D&C pretty much is an abortion, but whatever). Or how about the fact that her younger sister considers him her father? Yeah, that’s normal marry the man that your sister calls Dad.
Yeah, let’s talk about her relationship with her sister, Carrie. Carrie is bullied so horribly in her high school that she’s home schooled, and could probably really use a sister who has been through the horrible life with her. Where is Cathy however? Ah, too busy trying to fuck her way to the top as a ballerina.
Now, as for her second marriage to Julian, who cares? Not me, it was scandalous enough. But I do think it’s amusing that she names her son after his father but calls him “Jory” after his dead uncle. Yeah, that’s not crazy.
Now we can move onto Bart Winslow. Look, I can appreciate wanting revenge on the mother and grandmother who locked you up and ruined your childhood, but when you’re dressed as a ballerina, holding a whip, dancing around the naked ass of a stroke victim something in you has to go, “You know what? This is enough.” But not our Cathy! No, she does not think that this is enough. No, she’s not satisfied until she’s dressed up as her mother, pregnant with her step-father’s baby, has broken into the house during a Christmas party and incidentally sets the whole house on fire.
Still not on my side that Cathy is a crazy bitch? OK, how about the fact that not she sleeps for the last years of her life on her aforementioned mother’s bed. Why didn’t she take her two kids (three if you count the “neighbor’s kid Cindy” she adopted) and get the hell as far away from that world as possible?
Cathy sort of redeems herself in the last novel Seeds of Yesterday, but she still stays around the scary house that eerily resembles the house she was locked in. Seriously? I refuse to hang around my childhood home for more than four days because I can’t stand the memories of a crazy mother and she never tried to poison me.
Well, all this being said, she makes for a good read; nay, an excellent read.

Happy Christmas...the war has just begun...

It's official. I absolutely hate this season. Bea, you and I agree on almost everything, but I must speak out now. I hate this season starting officially today.
My birthday is the 24th of December. GlowBug's is the 26th of December. Add to that my sister's birthday on the 4th and her son's on the 10th of December and I am more stressed than the average bear. It gets worse gentle readers. I hate to be the complainer who is constantly whining, but for the past two years this month has blown big troll gonads.
Last year, with the exception of my son being born, December was a month of almost bankruptcy when my hubby lost his job, the hell of preparing for maternity leave as a teacher, and topped with prelabor almost everyday. This year, the month of December has meant almost bankruptcy (again) with my hubby changing jobs and me still paying off my maternity leave, my parents and my in-laws beginning what can only be described as the next War of the Roses over where GlowBug will be spending his first Christmas, my over-filled classes (thanks No Child Left Behind) getting into food fights rather than enjoying their small Christmas party, my boss pulling the traditional Christmas bonus of having the third of January off, and screaming fights with the aforementioned hubby about who will clean what in preparations for the Christmas trip to WV.
This Christmas, it's not about giving or receiving, it's about enduring. And I'm about through.
