Sink or swim, right?

Har har har...

So, today is the 34th anniversary of Roe V. Wade. And no, I'm not going to pretend that you people don't know what that is. Abortion is still legal, despite all (half-assed) attempts to the contrary, more than three decades later. How 'bout that? I'm not surprised because I don't think the folks in charge, as much as they may pay lip service to their "pro-life" ideals, are really ready to handle the consequences of making abortion illegal. "OH NOES! We may have to come up with a workable health care policy, make daycare affordable for actual people and re-vamp our bullshit family leave! Not to mention start providing actual sex education as opposed to Sunday School morality plays and coming up with better methods of contraception? Fuck that, you feminazis can just keep your abortions and we'll just keep calling you whores, 'kay? It's worked for 30 years!" Sigh.

There is not a doubt in my mind that abortion should be safe, legal, affordable and easy to obtain. I don't care about the morality of it. I don't care when life begins, at conception or at birth. Those questions are not interesting to me, when applied to the "abortion issue." I put quotes around it because for me, it's not an issue. It's a right. It pisses me off when people want to ban abortion, with exceptions for cases of rape or incest or if mom is going to die ('cause we care about her life then! No other time, though! And certainly not about her quality of life!). If you are so concerned about innocent life, why aren't you worried about those fetuses? Oh you are, but there are degrees of so-called "infanticide?" Shut up. No, for real, shut up. I don't care why someone wants to have an abortion. I don't care if it's because you were date-raped (I mean, I care that you were date-raped. I just don't have an opinion or judgement about what you may do about that pregnancy.), because you already have four kids and can't handle another, if you think your kid may be hideously deformed, or if you JUST DON'T WANT TO BE PREGNANT. The only thing anyone has to say to me is, "I don't want to be pregnant." or "I can't do this." (You don't even have to say that. You don't owe me or anyone else a fucking explanation.) No questions asked, girl. Do what you have to do.

And it's easy for me to say these things. I'm a reasonably well-education, mostly middle-class, liberal, ornery feminist. I know my mind and my rights. I know about birth control and where to get it. I can afford it when I need it. I've know about these things for as long as I can remember. I was raised a feminist, y'all. I've never been pregnant or had a serious pregnancy scare. I've never had to make that hard choice. And I respect anyone who has, regardless of what her choice ended up being. And who have lived with that choice, whatever it was, everyday.

P.S. I was a little nervous about posting what amounts to an actual, serious entry and asked the Good Auntie her opinion. Her response: What do you care? Nobody reads it anyway! (Except close family and friends, of course!) Heh. She's so supportive. LOVE HER. HATE HER. Heheheh.
